Guild Ball - The Empire Big League Campaign

Whether you want to shape the future of the Empire of the Free Cities or just compete for exclusive prizes, the Empire Big League is the place to be! This campaign will run Friday through Saturday of SteamCon and will serve as the final deciding point in the Butcher’s Civil War, the global event that started October 31. This campaign will be the final opportunity for you to influence the world of Guild Ball by deciding which Butcher wins control over their Guild: Brisket or Fillet. The results will be revealed during the Steamforged Keynote and will have significant consequences… In the Butcher’s Guild, there is only one recourse and punishment for disloyalty... death.

To play in the Empire Big League, tell the Longshanks your name, chosen Guild, and whether you’re Team Brisket or Team Fillet! Then follow the steps outlined below:

1. Construct Your Plot Deck

From the Plots available you may construct a 12 card Campaign Plot deck for each game, your Plot deck may comprise of (only one of each card):

·       Any number of Common Campaign Plot Cards
·       Any number of Season 1 & 2 Plot Cards (please bring your own!)
·    Up to [4] Guild Specific Plot Cards
·    Up to [2] Rare Campaign Plot Cards (combination of Guild & non-Guild)

At the start of a game, shuffle your deck and deal [7] of these cards to yourself. From these, you may choose [5] to keep and use in your game.

2. Find a Game!

Once you have constructed your Plot Deck, either ask another convention attendee if they would like to play an Empire Big League game or ask the Longshanks to find an opponent for you.

After your game, total up the number of Campaign & Favour Points that you earned from your Plot Cards. Then, record your score with the Longshanks. Each Player also earns [1] Favour for playing a game. You will be able to ‘cash-in’ your Campaign Points & Favours with the Longshanks for exclusive Prizes!

Add your own suggestions and ideas, help us design a Guild, and shape the future of Guild Ball!

How about discussing what might be going on behind the scenes in your favourite Guild, how they’re adapting to the events of Seasons One and Two, or the potential impact of the Butcher’s Civil War?

This is your chance to find out in a lecture with Lead Writer Sherwin Matthews, who will be here to talk you through the current situation that each of the Guilds find themselves in and where they might go next…

Painting to a high standard is tough, but painting quickly to a high standard takes rare skill indeed! This event is perfect for players of any skill level interested in trying out an exciting, new way to play Guild Ball.

4pm - Seminar – Balance versus Flavour, with David ‘DC’ Carl

The full name of this seminar is ‘Balance versus Flavour – Two Game Design Principles Enter, One Game Design Principle Leaves?’ but that was a bit too wordy. We’ve all played balanced games, and we’ve all played flavourful games, but getting the balance just right is tricky business. Join DC to take a deeper look at the core concepts of game balance and game flavour, why the two often seem to come into conflict, and some of the methods game developers use to bring them together.

5pm - Hobby – Painting Master Class

Want to learn some new techniques to get that fine detail down? Or just want to hone your skills in general? Come to this Painting Master Class with our Master Painter James! He’s on hand to coach you through how to improve your technique, and make your Guild the best looking in all the Free Cities!

6pm - Dark Souls™ The Board Game – Live Staff Playthrough

The unveiling of Dark Souls™ the Board Game. Members of the Steamforged Games Design Team, led by designer Alex Hall, will demonstrate a walkthrough of the game that will be livestreamed to the world! Even if you can’t join us at SteamCon, make sure to tune in to our Twitch stream at https://www.twitch.tv/steamforged for this world premiere.

8pm - Guild Ball – 16-Player ‘Multi-Ball Mayhem!’ – SEASON 2

Are you already familiar with Guild Ball and looking for a whole new way to play the game? Multi-Ball Mayhem puts not one, not two, but THREE balls into play at once! Follow all the normal rules for a Guild Ball Regional Cup except there are three balls, and a Player needs 16 VP to win!

This event is perfect for coaches of any skill level interested in trying out an exciting, new way to play Guild Ball.

 8pm - Social – SteamyCon Mixer

You, me, Mat Hart, a bar—what stories will go untold? At SFG, we love every opportunity to connect with gamers over our shared passion for games. Come by, toast the new season, ask questions, and just have fun. Mat will be on hand to talk about some of the most exciting changes we’ve made in S3, so this is a ‘can’t miss’ event. Plus, well, you never know what hints Mat might try to weave into conversation about our future plans…

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 26th

10am - Guild Ball – 64-Player ‘Last Man Standing’ (World Championship Qualifier) – SEASON 2

So you think you have what it takes to be one of the best coaches in the World? Prove it! This qualifier, following our Regional Cup format, pits the most promising coaches against one another on the Pitch. Who will earn the right to represent their Guild in the finals? IT COULD BE YOU! The top Player from this event will go on to play in the World Championship Finals. Prove yourself on the Pitch and earn your Guild’s favour!

The Regional Cup restrictions on the number of Union models in a roster do not apply for this event. Fully painted & based miniatures are required for this event.

Have you wanted to get to know the Guild Ball universe a little better? Perhaps you have questions regarding the Century Wars and the unification, or you want to learn more about each of the different Sovereign States? Are you a devout Solthecian, curious to learn more about the church? Or perhaps the day to day life of a Guild Magister interests you?

Lead Writer, Sherwin Matthews, will be here to lead you through a discussion of the exciting world of the Empire of the Free Cities, as well as to answer any questions that you might have.

12pm - Hobby – Speed Painting Qualifier

This is a continuation of Friday’s event; see Friday for more details.

12pm - Seminar – Design a Model, with Mat Hart

This follow-on seminar picks up where yesterday’s Sculpting with Russ Charles left off. After designing a Guild and watching Russ sculpt a model for that Guild, now it’s time to help write rules and backstory for that model! Where does it come from? Is it a Striker or a Goalkeeper? What are its killer plays on the pitch? Mat Hart will talk you through the creation of a model from initial rough ideas to finished model, ready for playtest!

2pm - Social – Pundit Party!

Our volunteers are immensely important to us. They spend a lot of time helping us out, so this is one of the ways we say thank you. All Pundits are welcome to come relax, share a drink, and chat with us.

4pm - Guild Ball – 16-Team (48-Player) Team Tournament – SEASON 3

This is your first-ever chance to use your new Season 3 cards or your minis from Kick Off! Team up with your favourite gaming buddies to take on other Teams of Guild Ball Players. Playing Guild Ball solo is great, but add in the camaraderie of winning or losing together and you have a new way to enjoy the beautiful game.

4pm - Seminar – Learn to Sculpt Your Own Miniatures, with Russ Charles

Learn how to sculpt your own miniatures with Russ Charles, the man who’s sculpted most of the Steamforged Games range! Russ will take you through the basics of how to begin 3D sculpting your own miniatures.

To be able to work at this class, please bring a device that has Blender installed. Blender is a popular, open source 3D modelling app available for free from blender.org. A graphics tablet and pen with pressure control will be needed for sculpting work (Russ uses a Wacom Intuos). If you don't have access to these, you are still welcome to come take notes and watch the process from start to finish!

8pm - Seminar – Steamforged Games Keynote & Staff Q&A

If you’re at all interested in anything Steamforged is doing over the next year (and of course you are, you’re at SteamCon!), come along and see what we have planned for the future. We’ll even be pausing all other events so that no one has to miss out!

SUNDAY NOVEMBER 27th

10am - Guild Ball – 8-Player World Championship Finals – SEASON 2

The World Championship Finals are an invite-only event for qualifying Players drawn from earlier events across the world. These Players are the best Guild Ball Players in the world, and this event is the pinnacle of competitive Guild Ball. The final two qualifying positions are in the Golden Goal on Friday, and the Last Man Standing event on Saturday. Compete for a spot and prove your skill!

The Regional Cup restrictions on the number of Union models in a roster do not apply for this event. Fully painted & based miniatures are required for this event.

If you can’t make it to SteamCon then follow the action on our Twitch stream at https://www.twitch.tv/steamforged.

10am - Guild Ball – 16 Player Homelands Cup – SEASON 3

Come and play with your brand-new Season 3 cards or your minis from Kick Off! in one of our brand-new formats! Guild Ball has not always been a tool of the Guilds. At its purist form, it’s a game of community, a game of nations. In the Homeland Cup, coaches assemble their team rosters based on their models’ homeland, not Guild affiliation. Will you choose to lead the ferocious Skaldic nation, the hot-blooded Castellyians, the cunning Erskirii, or the devious Raed to victory? One thing’s for sure, this is an event like no other.

10am - Guild Ball – 16 Player Regional Cup – SEASON 3

This will be your first chance to play with the newly released Season 3 rules or your minis from Kick Off! in our tried-and-tested Regional Cup format. The Regional Cup is the standard Organised Play format that we recommend when a tournament organiser is looking to host a Guild Ball event. Take this opportunity to adapt to your guild’s changes and to try out all your new models. Bring your team, bring your cards, and bring in the new season!

11am - Hobby – Speed Painting Finals

Welcome to the big time! If you managed to progress from the qualifying rounds, then you’re clrealy skilled enough to increase the pressure. All of the finalists will begin a speed painting round at the same time while our judge calls out challenge commands! Sure, you can paint fast, but can you paint fast with your off hand or while standing on one leg!?

12pm - Hobby – Airbrushing Class

New to the airbrush and looking for the basics to get you started? Or are you an expert looking for some tips to bring your airbrush game to the next level? This is the class for you! Our painter James will give you all the tips and tricks you need to max out your airbrushing skills!

12pm - Hobby – Kraken’s Den

Have a mind-blowing idea for a board game, card game, or miniatures game? Come pitch it to Mat Hart, Rich Loxam, and David ‘DC’ Carl. This is your opportunity to book a slot, make your pitch, and get feedback from three huge names in the industry. If your idea is good enough, you could even get a deal with us to make your game!

4pm - SteamCon Closing Ceremony

As fun as its been, one of the greatest weekends in gaming must come to an end. We’ll be awarding the winners of the painting competitions, and showing off our honoured guest. We’ll also close out the show by crowning our first-ever Guild Ball World Champion and the SteamCon Master Artisan of 2016. Afterwards, it’ll be up to you to go forth and spread your tales of glory and spectacle we were all lucky enough to share at SteamCon 2016.
