Guild Identity Card Previews - All The Cards!!

Last week, we began the Guild Identities public preview, a sneak peek at an upcoming expansion to Guild Ball that allows coaches to add powerful new abilities to their entire team every time they play! If you missed the start of the Guild Identities public preview, you can find all the information on it HERE. When we revealed the Guild Identities, we only showed you a single card from each Guild, with the intent of allowing you to get a feel for the system and debate the impact of important aspects such as Heal Rates. We had originally intended to wait until next week to release the remaining cards; however, we have instead chosen to release all the remaining Guild Identities to you so you can start playing with them today!

Common Questions

Since the beginning of the public preview we have been monitoring our forums and social media outlets to see what you all thought about Guild Identities and to watch the ongoing discussions about them. Here are the answers to some of the most commonly asked questions:

What is the purpose of GICs?

Even though this question hasn’t frequently come up word-for-word, your responses indicate that more information is needed about what the GICs are meant to do. So, in as short and concise a way as possible, here are the aims of Guild Identities:

  • Be a meaningful and interesting expansion to the game of Guild Ball that adds more variety to each game
  • Provide an additional tactical layer to team construction both when creating a tournament roster and when creating 6-player teams on the Pitch
  • Allow us (the Development Team) to experiment with the modification of Heal Rates and to see how this effects the game as a whole, as well as in individual Guilds
    • Furthermore, to experiment with the idea that a lower average Heal Rate may lead to slightly shorter games due to a slightly faster rate of take-outs occurring
  • Allow us to rebalance Guilds where necessary without making changes to individual player cards

Why is This Card’s Heal Rate Lower Than Average?

This is perhaps the most common comment that we’ve seen regarding individual Guild Identities and, in hindsight, is something we should have explained in more detail in the first Guild Identities blog post. In a game or event that uses Guild Identities, ‘not using an Identity’ is not a choice that is available to coaches. In effect, if a game or event is choosing to make of use Guild Identities then everyone must use them. The reason for this is that if some are using GICs and some are not, then it undermines the ‘balancing’ aim of Guild Identities. There wouldn’t be much of a point in not giving the Engineers a Heal Rate of [4] on any GICs if an Engineer coach can choose to not use any of the cards at all, by example.

In addition to this, looking over the Guild Identities, the average Heal Rate across all the available cards is [3] (3.2 to be more specific). This is quite a big idea to digest for most experienced Guild Ball coaches who are accustomed to the standard game’s Heal Rate of [4]. As we said in our aims, we want: “to experiment with the idea that a lower average Heal Rate may lead to slightly shorter games due to a slightly faster rate of take-outs occurring”. It is fully intended that the average Heal Rate of GICs is closer to [3] than to [4] and a number of Guilds simply do not have access to a Heal Rate [4] card at all.

Are GICs Meant to Differ a Lot in Power Level?

Between the Guilds, they are indeed meant to differ in power level, and there is a very good reason for this. Remember the GIC aim that is related to this question: “Allow us to rebalance Guilds where necessary without making changes to individual player cards”. Maintaining the overall balance of Guild Ball will always be one of our highest priorities here at Steamforged Games. However, because we aim to create a game with hugely varied Guilds and flavourful playstyles as well as a steady rate of new releases, balancing Guild Ball requires a regular amount of adjustment. Historically we have administered this through card updates at the turning of a new Season and occasionally through the release of Errata documents. GICs allow us to adjust the balance of Guild Ball without needing to edit individual player cards, simply by editing the content of one or more GICs or even releasing brand new Guild Identities. Because Guild Identities are intended for use in this way some will, by definition, be more or less powerful than others.

Within a single Guild, however, each Guild Identity should represent a viable option for coaches to use when building their team. We definitely want to hear your feedback on which GICs are outperforming others within a given Guild.

When Can We See the Rest of The GICs?

Today! See the links at the bottom of this blog for the full digital files.

Are There Any Card Updates?

There will not be any edits to existing cards today. This is firstly because we do not believe that enough time has passed in the preview for sufficient data to be collected that would lead to card edits. Secondly, we wish to see how you all react to the full set of Guild Identities in their unaltered form.

That’s all for today folks! Remember to post your thoughts on the Guild Identity Theory posts in the General Discussion Forum or within the Guild Specific Sub-Forums. Please leave any feedback you have from games played within the Game Feedback Thread. We hope you continue to enjoy the preview!
