Combining the Core Sets | Journal #18 | Monster Hunter World: The Board Game

As we reveal more and more about the two core sets for Monster Hunter World: The Board Game, it begs the question:
Can the Ancient Forest and Wildspire Waste sets be combined?
The answer, we’re excited to say, is YES!
And I’m here to tell you how that works.
How Do Combined Campaigns Work?
Let’s start with the basics:
How do campaigns work, when you’re playing with both sets?
Handily, this is explained at the back of the rulebooks for both the Ancient Forest and the Wildspire Waste sets.
For today, though, let’s break it down step by step:
Choose any combination of all 8 hunters to play with. Want to play with a great sword hunter and insect glaive hunter in the same party? You absolutely can.
Increase the number of campaign days from 25 to 45. With so many more monsters to hunt, you’ll need more time to hunt them!
You can start with the introductory quest from either set. To kick off your campaign, you can choose either the assigned quest for Great Jagras, or the Barroth assigned quest.
Once you’ve completed the introductory quest, you can hunt any monster, in any order. Want to go from hunting Great Jagras to hunting Pukei-Pukei? And then on to Anjanath? It's an open world, so hunt whichever monster you like!
Defeat either the 4-star difficulty Rathalos or Diablos to win the campaign. Defeating any 4-star monster will see you claim victory!
So, we can play as any hunter we like, and hunt any monster we like, too. Awesome!
But what about crafting equipment?
Crossover Weapons and Armour
One of our main aims here was to keep things simple.
That said:
Yes, Ancient Forest hunters can craft weapons and armour from Wildspire Waste monsters. And yes, Wildspire Waste hunters can craft weapons from Ancient Forest monsters, too!
As an example, check out the great sword hunter’s forge reference card for the Wildspire Waste:
Just like it is in the Ancient Forest set, the great sword hunter can’t make a weapon from every monster in the Wildspire Waste.
Still, that must mean there are extra weapon and attack cards for each hunter.
So, where are these kept?
Crossover Card Storage
To keep things simple, all weapon and attack cards for the greatsword hunter, craftable from monsters in the Ancient Forest and Wildspire Waste sets, are inside the Ancient Forest set.
In other words: all the greatsword cards are with the greatsword hunter. All the insect glaive cards are with the insect glaive hunter. And so on.
If you’re only playing with one of the sets, just take out the cards you need and leave the rest in the game box.
But wait — what about armour cards?
Crossover Armour Cards
Every hunter can make armour from every monster in the game.
You could play with a great sword hunter and equip them with a Barroth weapon AND Barroth armour!
To make this work, there are 4 copies of every armour card belonging to a monster in that monster’s set.
For example, there are 4 copies of every piece of Rathalos armour in the Ancient Forest set.
Because you’ll play with a maximum of 4 hunters at once, you’ll always have enough armour cards to build any armour you like — regardless of the combination of hunters, and regardless of whether or not you combine the Ancient Forest and Wildspire Waste sets.
In short: the more sets you play with, the more hunter, monster, and equipment options you’ll have for your campaign!
And we haven’t even covered the Elder Dragons, yet...
