Items, Weapons, and Armour in DARK SOULS™: The Roleplaying Game
The DARK SOULS™ video games are famous for telling their story through the items you find on your journey. With DARK SOULS™: The Roleplaying Game, we took a different approach.
We want you to tell your story. And we want to give you as much scope to do that as possible. That’s why the rulebook contains pages upon pages of items, weapons, and armour: So you can kit out your characters exactly how you like for their many adventures.
We caught up with co-designer and lead writer, Rich August, to find out more about items in DARK SOULS™: The Roleplaying Game. Take it away, Rich…
Every DARK SOULS™ fan has their favourite set of equipment, their preferred weapon to take on the hollow horde, and the ring needed for their particular play style.
Well, this tabletop roleplaying game makes sure you can emulate that build!
Customisation
Standard 5e allows you to customise your character with a choice of subclasses. Those didn’t feel especially DARK SOULS™-ian to us, so we opted for something different.
Here, customisation comes from your choice of equipment.
Nearly every suit of armour, sword, halberd, club, claws, and whip is in there, in an items chapter long enough to be its own book! Trust us, it’s quite a monster.
And you don’t need to worry about your class when choosing your loadout, either. We’ve stripped out ‘proficiencies’ entirely.
That’s right: Any character class can use any combination of armour, weapons, and rings, so long as they meet the minimum Strength value required to use them. Yep, it’s that simple.
Want to be a pyromancer in Dragonscale armour wielding a katana? No problem!
Skills
But that’s not all. Just as wielding certain weapons in the video game grants you access to new skills, so does it in the tabletop roleplaying game.
Of course, those skills don’t come for free. You’ll need to spend Position to make use of them, but that’s the risk you always need to calculate when playing DARK SOULS™: The Roleplaying Game.
In short, how you dress will be a vital element of preparing your character for battle. It isn’t about looking cool. Well… Not just about that, anyway.
