The Kithguard Core Expansion delivers the full weight of ambushing cohort models to the table!

Fraser McFetridge, of the Warmachine development team, here again to take a look at Kithguard’s next Warlock — Tarja Grimtusk.

And I’m going to start with her defining rule:

Thought that was it? Oh no. There’s more:

Through a combination of these, Tarja completely turns the capabilities of the humble Jungle Troll (we’re calling this warbeast “humble” now?) up to a new level—opening up a massive number of new ways to apply their array of weapons, while also significantly cranking up their lethality.

That’s it, right? She couldn’t possibly do more for Jungle Trolls than this… could she?

Ambush first, ask questions later

Of course she could. Let’s take a look at her feat and spell list.

I’ll start with her feat. In keeping with the Kithguard theme, Tarja’s feat isn’t tied to her control range – perfect for repositioning her ambushers into exactly the right spot to engage their targets.

You might be getting the impression that while Tarja’s perfectly happy to play with one or two units, she really wants to go heavy on her battlegroup. You’d be correct, and her spell list doubles down on this.

I won’t go into the specifics of every spell here, but instead paint the bigger picture of how they work together to create Tarja’s distinct playstyle: warbeasts quietly approach from the jungle canopy, descend on the invading force in a single coordinated strike, then dart off again to engage in mobile skirmish tactics, taking advantage of their foe’s disarray.

And yes, Tarja gets stuck in too

Tarja wouldn’t pass up the opportunity to join the scrap herself:

Between several bonus attacks and free spells, Tarja can get right into the thick of it, get a lot of work done, then sprint back to the safety of the jungle…

Surprise! Chomper!

Chomper is an ambushing heavy warbeast!

I won’t wax on about how awesome this guy is. I’ll just let you imagine the carnage (pun intended) when Chomper pops out of a tunnel on either Tarja’s or Craghorn’s feat turn…

Diggy hole: Tunnel Rats

Next up is a unit that perfectly complements our favourite ambushing heavy: Tunnel Rats.

Tunnel Rats are the ultimate Kithguard utility unit, placing and repositioning your trapdoor markers exactly where you need them, removing a pesky defence, and putting up an obscuring cloud wall. The Rats’ bag of tricks can be essential to your guerrilla warfare game plan.

Right tool for the job

Kithguard Infantry (and their Sergeant) bring a level of tactical versatility that can prove essential to your game plan.

With three very different weapon options and the tactical flexibility to use them properly in both combined melee and ranged attacks, Kithguard Infantry can adapt to almost any battlefield role: burning a path on the front line, bombarding the enemy from a backfield objective, or gunning down key models.

And however you’re planning to use this unit, their Sergeant amplifies it—whether that’s ambushing deeper into the enemy’s lines, or double-dipping on your mortar barrage.

When you put them together…

Logan Grindstone is the perfect complement to whatever flavour of units the Kithguard bring to the table.

Whether he’s protecting your forces from enemy barrages, enabling swift repositions, or doubling down on a critical role, Logan will often be found at the back of a Kithguard warparty, dictating the battle plan and keeping your guerrillas fighting on your terms.

The trap’s almost set

From Tarja’s hard-nosed leadership to Chomper’s lurking threat, the Tunnel Rats’ sneaky battlefield control, and the added utility of Kithguard Infantry, the Kithguard Core Expansion brings even more tricks, threats, and tactical depth to the Southern Kriels.

The Kithguard Core Expansion goes up for pre-order next week, so there’s not long to wait before you can start planning your next bout of guerrilla warfare as the Southern Kriels Kithguard.
